What is Insight Dialogue ?

« Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation practice that encompasses verbal communication. Like many other practices, it helps people realize greater happiness by providing an effective means with which they can free themselves from grasping, aversion and confusion. To do this, we pay attention to what is going on inside and outside ourselves. We remain present to pleasant and unpleasant experiences alike. We let go of reactive habits, usually a little bit at a time. Unlike most meditation practices, Insight Dialogue is practiced with two or more people and, rather than being practiced in silence, we listen, we pause, and speak.

Gregory Kramer

Mindfulness, or awareness of experience and our reactions to experiences as they arise, is not easy to maintain when we are talking to people. The richness of the experience of human relationship and the intellectual demands of language pull us into habits. Our nearly instantaneous conditioned reactions to people and things – wanting, not wanting, judging, emotional responses, and so on – cause us to become the reaction. That is, we experience no unidentified awareness of the process. This is why most meditation practices are solitary and silent, and some are practiced only in special environments, apart from the stimuli of everyday life. Such solitary practices help us develop tranquility and concentration and can provide us with glimpses of clarity and joy. Insights unfold in deep, individual practice that transform how we feel about life. Insight Dialogue is a methodical approach to developing and maintaining a meditative state of being while engaged in the challenges of relationship and words. There is no single mind state sought. A single session may include slow, detailed awareness of deep silence, then change to a faster moving, humorous, yet mindful interchange. We may identify with reactions one moment then recognize our reactivity the next. Urgency, depth, frustration, creativity, habitual reaction, stillness – the experience of the practice can have many flavors…»
